Recruit Reinforcements: Nominate Vice-Captains for Your Golf Trip

Expedition Planning Manager

Golf trips across the pond are unforgettable experiences, but let’s face it... They’re also a lot of work! Even with H&B handling most of the heavy lifting, there are still plenty of details for the PGA Professional to manage. That’s where a little extra help can go a long way.

By enlisting reinforcements in the form of a Vice-Captain or a makeshift Travel Committee, you can lighten your load, involve your members in the process, and create a stronger sense of ownership in the trip. It’s a win-win that ensures everything comes together while adding a layer of excitement for your group.

The Role of an Informal Travel Committee

In another guide, we talked about the importance of recruiting the “Cool Kids” to get the trip off the ground. Well, those same members can be invaluable as a makeshift Travel Committee. Here’s how they can help:

  • Course Selection and Itineraries: Have your core group weigh in on the courses to play and sights to see off the course. Their buy-in ensures the itinerary resonates with the group, and makes it easier to fill slots on the trip. They'll be out there selling it for you!
  • Future Trip Planning: This group can also help identify potential destinations for future trips. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and their involvement builds anticipation among other members for what’s next.

Appointing a Vice-Captain

Think of this as your Ryder Cup-inspired move! A Vice-Captain can take on specific responsibilities, making your job as the PGA Professional just a little easier. But don't follow Team USA's example: If everyone is Vice-Captain, no one is.

  • Delegate Based on Strengths: Every group has its unique personalities. The foodie of the group could work with the H&B Concierge to select restaurants. Another member might love researching sightseeing opportunities. Use their strengths to your group's advantage.
  • Create a Sense of Pride: Giving members a role in the trip isn’t just practical—it’s fun! They’ll feel a sense of ownership and pride in contributing to the success of the journey.

Why This Works

  • Eases Burden on the Pro: Let’s face it, you’ve already got enough on your plate. Having members handle smaller tasks allows you to focus on the bigger picture and the key elements of the overall experience.
  • Builds Buy-in from the Group: When members are actively involved in the planning, they’re more invested in the trip. Their enthusiasm can help things run just a little smoother.
  • Enhances the Experience: A well-rounded group effort often leads to a more thoughtful and personalized itinerary. By leaning on the strengths and interests of your members, you’re adding depth and excitement to the trip.

Traveling overseas with your members doesn't have to be a solo effort. By involving key members as a pseudo Travel Committee or appointing a Vice-Captain, you’re creating a collaborative environment that makes the trip smoother, more engaging, and more memorable for everyone.
